Vice-president and chancellor to lead capital higher education in critical challenges

The vice-chancellor and president of the University of East London, Professor Amanda Broderick, has been elected the next chair of London Higher, the umbrella body representing over 40 higher education institutions across the capital.
Professor Broderick, who takes up the unpaid role in July, will work alongside CEO Dr Diana Beech and the London Higher board to press the interests of the sector at a time of critical pressures arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.
I am honoured to be taking on this vitally important role at this time of immense challenge for the higher education sector.
"London Higher, through its networks and campaigns has been at the forefront of helping HEIs across London navigate the pandemic and build new relationships across the sector and beyond as we look towards a green and thriving recovery.
"Thank you to every one of our HEIs who contribute to the unique, vibrant, diverse, transformational educational eco-system of London. Together, we will be central to driving recovery and renewal in communities across London and throughout the UK.
"I look forward to championing the needs of our members, driving change and seizing the opportunities to thrive and grow. It will be a privilege to represent our membership and to lead London Higher in the next phase of its development,"
Professor Amanda Broderick, UEL vice-chancellor and president, said.
London Higher CEO Dr Diana Beech said, "I am delighted that through an open, fair and competitive election process, we have been able to appoint Professor Amanda Broderick as chair. Her entrepreneurial spirit, strong background in higher education, and leadership experience mean that she has the insight and expertise to lead London Higher in demonstrating the benefits of higher education in London as we begin to rebuild and recover.
"I know that under her leadership, and with a strong team around her, London Higher will continue to play a pivotal role in these critical times for our members across the capital."
Professor Broderick succeeds Professor Paul Layzell, vice-chancellor of Royal Holloway, University of London, who has chaired the organisation for the past four years.
He said, "At this time of challenge and change, the vital work of London Higher has never been more important. I know that our members will work closely with Amanda and the London Higher team to showcase the opportunities that a higher education in London can provide."
Professor Broderick has previously led in and held professorships at the Universities of Newcastle, Salford, Durham, Coventry and Aston. Her research lies in the fields of international business, marketing psychology and strategic communications.
