UEL leads Royal Docks support of NHS Nightingale

The University will make accommodation available to the NHS throughout April at its Docklands campus, which is less than two miles from the newly created hospital, NHS Nightingale at ExCeL London. This will provide respite to staff who are working long hours. The accommodation will provide a safe and secure environment for healthcare workers who are sacrificing time away from friends and family.

University of East London staff and students are already volunteering their expertise and skills at NHS Nightingale, including nursing, physiotherapy and technician teams, as well as staff and students volunteering for non-clinical support. The University have been working very closely with the NHS, local trusts and Newham Borough Council to offer a range of support including:

• Dedicated access to equipment including nursing SIM lab equipment, antibacterial sanitiser-producing equipment and other supplies from our Allied Health teams
• Facilities to house ambulances and their crews in a temporary terminal depot
• Office facilities for logistics and administration
• Catering facilities
• Remote counselling services
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) training
• Parking facilities for healthcare workers and volunteers

We’ve heard many amazing and heartfelt stories in support of the national effort to protect and serve the public and our local communities throughout this global health crisis. With our Royal Docks Campus located so close to NHS Nightingale we know that the University of East London has an important and central role to play in supporting the NHS, the government and the public during the unprecedented challenges coronavirus is setting us,”
