East End rapper Professor Green gave students a glimpse of life at the University of East London during a special live broadcast on Wednesday.

The virtual Open Evening, hosted at University Square Stratford, was a combination of chat, music, videos and explanations about what UEL can offer, all specially tailored to accommodate social distancing and other COVID-secure measures.

The event, hosted live on YouTube and Microsoft Teams, was aimed at students making decisions about what they should study and where.

This isn't my first time at the University of East London. I remember performing here at the Royal Docks Festival in 2019 to a packed-out audience,"

Professor Green, rapper, said.

He was also quizzed about his own life. He said, "My favourite subject at school was maths. I was quite good at mental arithmetic when I was younger and that's the part of my brain I use for free-styling."

His co-host for the evening was Cheyanne Meyer, a business law student and Residential Life scholar. Hailing from Washington DC, she was asked why she was attracted to UEL as a place to study. She said, "The main thing for me is being in London. It's one of the biggest cities in the world with so many opportunities, I still can’t believe I live here sometimes, and it’s been over a year.

"I'll be looking out at the beautiful view of the city on the Docklands campus and I could just stare for hours. I'll just say to my friends, 'Wow we live in London' like I genuinely sometimes forget and it's something I don’t ever want to take for granted."

Professor Green asked her if living on campus had improved her social life.

She said, "Oh 100 per cent! I wouldn’t have 90 per cent of the friends I have today if I didn't live on campus last year.

"One of my best friends I only met last year because she was my flatmate and we are living together again this year. For some people the thought of sharing a flat with other people may be intimidating but, I promise you, if you put yourself out there your flatmates could become some of the best people in your life."

The two hosts chatted with Dhara Parekh about her move from India to study and quizzed Sian Trimble-Davey, East London Sport marketing and communications manager, about the organised and informal sports and activities available to students.

Professor Hassan Abdalla, University of East London provost, said, "Despite difficult circumstances caused by COVID-19, we were able to convey to hundreds of potential students that universities are very special places where you can unlock your life potential and meet new friends for life.

"The broadcast showcased how the university is handling the COVID-19 pandemic but, more importantly, how students can engage with their tutors and their colleagues to create a fully-rounded and transformative experience."

Music came from Jude Anzell, who is studying Performing Arts at UEL and releases singles on Spotify under Aidoneus.
