Students at the University of East London have ranked their economics degree course the best in the country – for the second time in two years.
The BSc (Hons) course scored 91 per cent in student satisfaction in the independent Complete University Guide league tables for 2021.
Students have praised the course for blending theoretical knowledge with practical experience to put an emphasis on employability. An example of this mix can be found with the 16 industry standard Bloomberg terminals. These give students an opportunity to make evidence-based financial decisions and gain real-world experience.
This is supplemented by access to some of the world's leading blue-chip financial companies as the campus sits close to the City of London, the Bank of England and the Canary Wharf financial district.
The economics team is delighted with these results as they clearly demonstrate that our students are very happy with all aspects of the course and its focus on employability,"
Dr Ejike Udeogu, UEL economics course leader, said.
Dr Udeogu continued, "Our curriculum covers not only core economic theory but also more niche and topical content such as behavioural economics, international economics, financial economics and business forecasting.
"The students are taught by highly experienced and motivated staff who are experts in their own fields of study. And through the bespoke pastoral support that we provide, we have been able to create a very inclusive staff and student learning community that has contributed to enhancing the overall university experience."
Student Ruby Button said, "I feel the course is popular because it gives us so many career opportunities. This is complemented by the CISI qualification (Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment) that we can complete alongside our studies.
"Having the CISI qualification, as well as an understanding of industry software, will look excellent on my CV. The course itself covers so many aspects of economics, which has given me a broader understanding of which sectors I can go into, yet it still manages to cover each aspect to a high level."
Student Marzia Nurulmomin said, "This course is popular because there are many economic theories and concepts which can be applied to real life situations, including the workplace. For example, behavioural economics has made an impact on how the government manages its policies.
"This degree will help me with my career prospects as I have developed some vital skills, such as research and information, literacy and analytical skills."
Professor Mohammad Ali, dean of the Royal Docks School of Business and Law, said, "This ranking is a great tribute to our staff and students and we're tremendously proud to have achieved this status two years in a row.
"As part of Vision 2028, our 10-year transformation strategy, the University is committed to ensuring that our degree courses are tailored to an ever-changing careers environment. The economics course is a good example of how we are reaching this goal, with strong partnerships with major companies that aim to reduce the gap between the world of study and the world of work."
Graduates from the course have successfully gained employment with top organisations, including the European Commission, Apple, UBS, Nomura, National Grid, Credit Suisse, Sparta Global and Barclays.
Graduate Celia Gueto Melo is an economist with the European Commission in Brussels. She said, "Choosing the University of East London was about personal and professional growth. I gained not only strong economic skills, but also I became aware of the importance of engaging with, and giving back to, our communities.
"My professors and lecturers taught me to step out of my comfort zone, to think outside the box and to challenge the discipline. My employers have valued my social and human approach to the economic world, and I am determined to continue working for a fairer and more sustainable world, just as UEL taught me."
