Our BSc Economics equips you with the right skills to tackle the different challenges you’ll face in the ever-changing business world.
This professionally recognised course (CISI), ensures that you graduate with the skills that employers need, delivered by leading experts in the field that care passionately about their subject.
You will gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the methods, theory and applications of economic science and finance, as well their functions in the contemporary business world.
Alongside essential academic theory, this course will develop your problem-solving, technical and analytical skills as you apply economic analysis to real-life issues, based on case studies from our major business links.
The course has a strong emphasis on the world of work, so you’ll benefit from skills and enterprise workshops, and we’ll help you to find work experience through our network of connections in busy Stratford, iconic Canary Wharf and beyond. Through your understanding of key developments in the global business environment, you will be prepared for a career as an economist as well as a skilled manager, researcher, analyst or strategist working in finance, banking, business management, consulting, commerce, the public sector and voluntary organisations.

One of my highlights of studying at UEL has been the ability to learn by doing. As a business student I have been provided unlimited access to the Bloomberg suite at UEL, which has allowed me to develop a strong knowledge of industry leading software and gain a Bloomberg Market Concepts professional qualification.
Fees and funding
Tuition Fee Loan
You can apply for a loan to cover the cost of your tuition fees, which will be paid directly to UEL. There are no up-front fees required. Repayment only starts after you finish your course and are earning over £25,000. If you haven’t finished repaying your loan after 30 years it will be automatically cancelled.

Maintenance Loan
You can apply for a loan to help with living costs such as food, travel and accommodation. How much you can borrow depends on where you live and study, and whether you are currently on welfare benefits. The maximum loan you can apply for is £12,729.

At UEL, we understand that studying in another country is a big financial commitment. If you apply early for an undergraduate, you may be entitled to a scholarship of up to £3,000.You can find out more about the international scholarships here.

As part of the Tier 4 student visa requirements, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) estimate that you will need £1,265* per month to cover your living costs. It includes expenses for accommodation, food and drink, travel within London, text books, entertainment, clothing, toiletries and laundry. Most Tier 4 students are required to show they have sufficient funds to cover the first nine months of the course before they start- a total of £11,385- in addition to the tuition fees. Please make sure you also factor in the fees for the visa application and immigration health surcharge when budgeting.

Deposits and paying by instalments
International students are required to pay a deposit prior to being issued a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
Your remaining balance will be paid in five monthly instalments over your first term. The first of these instalments must be paid when completing your enrolment on arrival at UEL. Please follow the payment instructions here.
After the required payment has been made, you will be asked to complete the online International Student Reply Form to confirm your acceptance of our offer and of our terms of admittance and fees policy.

If you do not meet the academic English language requirements for your course, you may be eligible to enrol onto a pre-sessional English programme. The length of the course will depend on your current level of English and the requirements for your degree programme. We offer a 5-week and an 11-week pre-sessional course. Find out more.
What you'll learn
Whether or not you’ve studied the subject before, we’ll give you a thorough introduction to the science of economics, and the business environment in which economies and economic decisions operate.
The course will help you to understand business behaviour in the context of financial institutions and markets, underpinned by a good knowledge of economic theory and policies.
You’ll take a module in Quantitative Methods for Economics and Finance, learn about econometrics, welfare economics, economics of development, international trade, the political economy and how to manage an investment portfolio.
In your second and third years you’ll have a choice of nine optional modules, including Economics of Business Strategy, Behavioural Economics, and Monetary Economics, Macroeconomic Modelling and Analysis and Corporate Governance, so you can really customise your learning.
This highly popular course will also help you develop valuable transferrable skills, including problem-solving, technical and analytical skills. You’ll learn how to solve financial problems; use our award-winning Bloomberg terminals to source information and perform portfolio analysis; communicate effectively; manage a project and work as part of a team.

How you'll be assessed
We’ll assess you in a way that will mirror some of the tasks you will be expected to carry out during your career.
These include preparing and delivering reports and presentations, producing a portfolio of work, delivering a business pitch, analysing a case study, doing a literature review, conducting a business simulation or producing a financial analysis and plan.

Economics is a dynamic subject and we will help you learn in a variety of ways which will stimulate your interest and motivate you. Some of the ways you’ll learn include:
- Lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops.
- Independent study, supported by our specialist business library and a selection of digital materials, databases, handbooks, notes and other resources.
- In teams, to share ideas and insights with other students.
- Field trips, to see how economic theory is put into practice.
- From guest speakers representing a cross-section of business, economics, finance and banking expertise.
- Practical tasks - for instance, playing an investment game using our industry-standard Bloomberg trading platform. You’ll learn how to trade stocks and shares in capital and financial markets, developing sought-after investment management skills that will look impressive on your CV.
The staff teaching on the programme are passionate about their subject and very supportive. So there are plenty of opportunities to meet with your personal tutors if you want advice on how to work through a problem or assignment through regular consultation and feedback.

Your future career
According to the higher Education Statistical Agency (2015), graduates of Economics related courses enjoy starting salaries that are 21% higher than the average starting salary of university graduates.
This course provides an excellent pathway for a career as an economist in financial institutions and banking, business management, consulting, commerce, the public sector and voluntary organisations. Economists are in high demand in both the private and public sector. They can be skilled managers, researchers, analysts and strategists. Graduates may also progress on to postgraduate study.
Some of our graduates have gone on to work for Nomura, IAG Cargo, Macquarie, HSBC, Barclays, Wells Fargo and Metro Bank. Those that have gone on to postgraduate studies secured admission into UCL, LSE, and Queen Mary.
