Making a difference
The research we do at UEL makes a difference, and not just here in East London. We help people live better lives all over the world. From influencing policy on conflict resolution, to conserving UK peatlands and helping people with special needs live more independent lives - UEL research achieves positive social change.
UEL is one of the top new universities for research. The most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) put our world-leading research at 17% - nearly double the previous REF. At the same time, more than 90% of our research was assessed as 'internationally recognised' and more than 60% was rated 'internationally excellent'.
Our research is central in helping achieve our commitment to civic engagement. At UEL, we believe in working with communities to help create their futures. This kind of engagement means we can help shape policy and practice to bring real improvements to people's lives.
Our research is making lives better by tackling the big issues - not just here in East London, but beyond. We're helping people on our doorstep and we're helping people around the world. Current projects are looking at local issues such as antenatal health in Newham to global issues like migration.
Many of our academics are key members of influential policy working groups including Government, business and the not-for-profit sector. We are committed to making sure people know about the impact of our research and its benefit to the public. We uphold the UK concordat for engaging the public with research.
You can find out more about the impact that our research is having on the Impact Case Studies page.
Based in the major regeneration area of East London and with a genuine focus on civic engagement, working at UEL will give you the chance to develop projects with a real social impact.
Our Graduate School works to make sure our researchers have an outstanding experience at UEL., and oversees our research programmes, scholarships and ethics. The Graduate School also offers advice on applying for external funding.
