What we're researching

Financial news doesn’t just make the financial pages – it’s often front-page news as well. Since the credit crunch, banking and the world of corporate finance in particular have been high up the news agenda, and behind the headlines lies fertile ground for academic research.

As a postgraduate student you can be confident that you’ll be taught by research-active staff who bring their insights into the lecture theatres and seminar rooms to inform, stimulate and inspire.

Current research interests of our staff include Islamic banking and finance, financial risk management and derivatives. Here are some examples:

Dr Shampa Roy-Mukherjee, our Head of Finance, Economics and Risk, has research interests that include the economics of the Arab Spring, mathematical and statistical modeling and privatisation and moral hazard.

Senior Lecturer Dr Tat-Lung Chan worked as a risk specialist at Standard & Poors, the financial services and ratings company. His research interests include risk management, high-frequency trading and option pricing problems. He also edits academic journals, including Applied Mathematical Finance.

Dr Christina Stirk, our Head of Accounting, acquired extensive professional experience before making the move into academia, with past employers including the Royal Bank of Trinidad & Tobago, Touche Ross & Co (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) and WH Smith Group plc. Her research interests include current issues in international taxation and auditing.

Senior Lecturer Eric Owusu Boahen has research interests in micro-finance and micro-credit, financial reporting and corporate governance. He also had a professional services background and has worked for PWC and Prudential Bank.
