Injustice: Gods Among Us - videogame review

Videogame review

Nightwing and Harley Quinn...

Developed by NetherRealm Studios, Injustice builds on its Mortal Kombat roots and delivers an over the top action experience with a truckload of content that knocks out any other beat’em up in recent years. The storyline is simple yet genius: what would happen if the Joker drugged Superman and tricked him into destroying the one thing he loved? Answer: he would lose his mind and go on a Hitler phase of New World Order. Those who oppose him would die.

Unlike in MK9, there are no fatalities or X-ray attacks. Those are instead replaced with character specific super moves that are truly mind blowing. Superman launching his opponent into space, Aquaman flooding the arena and leaving you as shark bait, or Raven pulling you into a pocket dimension where 50ft Trigon unleashes heat vision on you. The game is great for beginners and does a clever job of expanding upon its combat system for more advanced players.

There has to be an applause for the terrific level design. Each stage responds and falls apart as players duke it out and launch each other through walls, roofs and buildings. Each level has specific in-game objects such as cars and trap doors that can be activated. There’s nothing funnier than battering your opponents into a cell in Arkham Asylum while Scarecrow hops out and drugs them into craziness using Fear Toxins. The character roster is fairly large with more future characters on the way. There’s also a ton of in-game unlockables such as costumes, music and challenge levels.

Overall a terrific game.
