UELSU: there for you

The SU’s latest General Meeting was held on Wednesday 24 April and the SU staff and students who were present report a number of positive developments.

Those who were at UEL a few years ago might have noted a slump in student activities in the last couple of years as initiatives dwindled (where’s Love Music, Hate Racism? Mayfest, anyone?). Things, are, however, looking up. The societies at UEL are alive, well and very numerous and the last election was the most attended in a long time. Sabuj Mohammad, President of the Student Union, told us: “More than 2700 students casted their vote, which is five times more comparing to the last two years. We did a lot of preparation since the last semester to make this year’s elections transparent, fair and to achieve high participation levels. I would like to say a big thanks to those of you who voted in the election. Thanks to all the candidates for their positive campaigns and to the current SU staff for their hard work.”

The SU still faces a number of challenges, as engaging 28,000 members is not an easy task. However, points out Sabuj, “the new SU lounge at Docklands and improved facilities at Stratford Dome have played an important role in our efforts to engage more students. I have met many students at events like the Coffee N Music Afternoons, the Chess Tournament and various speed-friending evenings, many of whom had never been to the SU before.” In other words: once again, your involvement is key! So why sit alone in your room at halls when there are friends waiting to meet you at the SU?

The AGM also discussed student-related issues, support for graduate students and relevant political topics ranging from pro-choice campaigns to anti-racist and BDS initiatives. You will be able to read the minutes of the AGM on the SU website, and prepare yourself for the next time you decide to attend!

Remember: the SU is you.
