This is a exciting degree from the Royal Docks Business School is designed to support future careers in the tourism and leisure industries. It has a strongly vocational emphasis, but also explores fundamental issues such as sustainability and economic growth and change.
Currently 200 million people (8 per cent of global workforce) work within tourism-related industries and tourism/culture and leisure sectors are buoyant parts of the UK and European economies.
The degree incorporates many established areas of business management, such as marketing and finance, but also focuses on strategic management, service and operations excellence.
Tourism contributes some $3.6 trillion dollars to the world economy and represents around eleven per cent of world GDP. This programme is designed to support the fact that tourism represents a major force in the UK and global economy, particularly in the light of London 2012 and beyond. Your studies explore general theories of business and management, but also focus on issues such as international tourism development, planning and sustainability and environmental/heritage concerns. The practical nature of the programme means it incorporates a range of field trips, taking advantage of UEL’s unique location in one of the most visited cities in the world and close to the site of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The degree is designed to equip you with a broad range of skills and knowledge required for work within the leisure, tourism and heritage industries.
The programme is offered as a Single Honours, Major, Joint or Minor award and offers a high degree of flexibility. It shares a number of common modules with other business related programmes in level 1, with a closer focus on tourism in levels 2 and 3. Assessment is through a combination of written coursework, presentations and examinations.
These include tourism management, research, planning, agency and promotion work. Sectors of direct relevance include airline, hotel, tour operators, catering, culture, heritage, and events, but this degree also presents opportunities within public and voluntary sectors in the UK and overseas. You may also use this degree to move on to an MBA or Masters degree programme.
