Programme summary for BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy

About the programme

Sports Therapy is concerned with the prevention of injury and rehabilitation of sports people back to optimum levels of functional and sports specific fitness. If you have aspirations of working with recreational or professional athletes to impact on peak performance and injury reduction, or of owning your own therapy business supporting individuals from a host of different sports, this is the programme for you.

Studying Sports Therapy at the University of East London will enable you to develop both subject-specific knowledge and the ability to relate it to the clinical situation. You will learn the scientific basis from which the pathologies and management of sports injuries can be understood and by the end of the programme, will be able to diagnose, form and implement a rehabilitative plan for a sports injury or dysfunction. This programme is run by the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience.

What you will study

BSc Sports Therapy offers a common core content, shared with the Sport and Exercise Science programme.

You will develop your thinking and practical skills throughout the programme, exploring:

  • sports therapy and its underpinning disciplines
  • the applied context of sports therapy
  • the competencies required for sports therapy, integrating theory and practice in an applied manner
  • the role of the sports therapist in injury prevention and athlete rehabilitation
  • boundaries of professional competence and the role of other exercise and health professionals.

In your final year you will complete an independent research project relating to the applied field of Sports Therapy which makes a significant contribution to the overall award of your degree.

Assessment

The Sports Therapy programme utilises a range of learning approaches, including traditional lectures, laboratory and clinic work.  You will be assessed using practical examinations, clinical portfolios, essays, critical analysis of papers, oral presentations, case studies and independent research.

Career opportunities

The University has a strong track record in graduate employability and offers opportunities for further study and research. This programme offers you the competencies required to work as a self-employed therapist or within the health and fitness industry, health promotion, professional sport or research.

There is also the opportunity to progress onto further study in sports rehabilitation and exercise.
