Programme summary for BA (Hons) Illustration
Currently offered as a minor or joint honours degree only, this programme enables you to develop a deep understanding of the language, methods and skills of Illustration. Focusing on the development of drawing, composition and visual communication, the programme challenges you to develop individual responses for a broad range of illustration solutions for projects that might be editorial, narrative, comic, satirical, fashion, natural world, forensic, etc.
Our lecturers are all practising artists and designers, many of whom are internationally recognised. We have a strong commitment to a programme of invited speakers and industry specialists who make an active contribution to the programmes, setting live projects and providing you with opportunities for work experience and employability studies.

About the programme
Our degree in illustration is only available in combination with another subject in a 2-subject Combined Honours degree. Historically, artists have always been involved in the business of communication through the use of visual imagery.
From Renaissance altar paintings to political satirists such as Hogarth and Gilray, images have been used to convey messages and meanings. As we develop our increasing reliance on media and global communication, the illustrator will have an important role to play in the future.
2-subject degrees
Illustration must be combined with another subject as part of a 2-subject degree. Popular combinations include Photography with Illustration, Graphic Design with Illustration and Animation with Illustration.
Programme structure
The programme can be studied full-time for 3 years or in a part-time mode. It has a modular structure that enables students to study it as a Major, Joint or Minor honours programme. This allows combinations to be built with its sister programmes in Digital Arts and Visual Communication and also other programmes in the School of Architecture and The Visual Arts or elsewhere within UEL as part of our Combined Honours menu.

Career opportunities are available in a range of fields, including video, film, photography, computer and web-based media, and publishing.
Support
UEL provides a comprehensive range of support services for students which includes: residential/student finance advice/careers advice/study skills development/IT/learning resources. The programme provides strong personal tutor guidance and professional advice related to the practice. Visiting artists, designers and other professional practitioners regularly visit the programme and study trips to working environments are an important component.
Admission
Students are selected on their suitability for the programme by a portfolio interview. Applicants would normally have completed an Art and Design Foundation, GAD, or an appropriate BTEC, GNVQ or Access programme of at least one year's duration prior to joining the programme. Students with other relevant professional or life experience will also be considered.
