Graphic Design is associated with most aspects of information design and advertising.
At UEL, graphic design practice is underpinned by a strong emphasis on the importance of critical thinking in relation to the practical activity of professional graphic design and visual communication in a world of convergent media and internationality. You will be enabled with practical skills in typography, publishing, editorial layout and design, web design and interactive design, to undertake a wide variety of creative projects that challenge ideas and methodologies for design in relation to sustainability, ethics, globalisation, digitisation and new media.
Pete Nevin: Programme Leader
Graphic design has moved from being paper and book publication orientated to new digital media platforms, and is associated with most aspects of information design and advertising.
Our programme is discourse and practice based. It delivers teaching of skills integrated with theory, seminars and visual assignments. The programme also actively taps into its London location, the new designers working here, and opportunities for research offered by the capital.
You can combine this programme with a range of other subjects as part of a 2-subject degree. Popular combinations include Graphic Design with Photography, Graphic Design with Moving Image and Graphic Design with Animation.
The programme can be studied full-time for 3 years or in a part-time mode. It has a modular structure that enables students to study it as a Single, Major, Joint or Minor honours programme. This allows combinations to be built with its sister programmes in Digital Arts and Visual Communication and also other programmes in the School of Architecture and The Visual Arts and also the University as part of our Combined Honours menu.
Career opportunities include employment as a freelance of assistant designer, an editor in a facilities house or production company, an art editor or magazine designer, a corporate designer or an advertising creative.
UEL provides a comprehensive range of support services for students which includes: residential/student finance advice/careers advice/study skills development/IT/learning resources. The programme provides strong personal tutor guidance and professional advice related to the practice. Visiting artists, designers and other professional practitioners regularly visit the programme and study trips to working environments are an important component.
Students are selected on their suitability for the programme by a portfolio interview. Applicants would normally have completed an Art and Design Foundation, GAD, or an appropriate BTEC, GNVQ or Access programme of at least one year's duration prior to joining the programme. Students with other relevant professional or life experience will also be considered.
You can start many programmes in either September or February and applications are simple to make. Click below to:
