Programme summary for BA Honours Fine Art

Three years Full time, five years part-time

The BA Fine Art at UEL attracts students with a wide range of experience and a breadth of background. This  diversity contributes a unique richness to the programme, and is complemented by the integration of a wide range of media and approaches from both students and staff, who are all practicing artists. This encourages an independent approach to studio practice, and results in work of outstanding quality and originality.

At UEL our Fine art degree allows you to work in a range of media, encompassing painting, printmaking, sculpture, video and installation.

The programme is studio based, and you will be provided with a studio space. You will receive personal tutoring, providing guidance and support throughout the programme, and there are opportunities to work with practising artists.

About the programme

The BA (Hons) Fine Art at UEL attracts students with a wide range of experience and a breadth of background. This diversity contributes a unique richness to the programme, and is complemented by the integration of a wide range of media and approaches from both students and staff, who are all practising artists.

This encourages an independent approach to studio practice, and results in work of outstanding quality and originality.

2-subject degrees

You can combine this programme with a range of other subjects as part of a 2-subject degree. Popular combinations include Fine Art with Moving Image, and Fine Art and Graphic Design.

Programme structure

  • The Fine Art programme is a three year full time programme
  • There is also a part-time route, usually lasting five years.
  • All students are allocated a studio space and a Personal Tutor on day one of the programme.
  • First Year students are encouraged to be experimental and engage in a number of projects involving a wide range of media and attitudes
  • By the end of the first term they are developing their work individually with the support of their Personal Tutor.

Career opportunities

Many graduates go on to careers as independent artists or within teaching, museum services, the cultural industries or arts administration. There are also opportunities for further postgraduate study, such as UEL’s MA Fine Art.

Support

  • You are assigned a Personal Tutor during your first week at UEL
  • All the tutors are practicing artists in their own right, and have a very good understanding of their students' needs and ambitions
  • Year Tutors run weekly seminars where wider issues affecting students are discussed as well as the work itself
  • Student accommodation is available on the Docklands site
  • There is a network of recent graduates who pass on experience of finding studios and exhibiting

Admission

  • To enter Level One you should have successfully completed a Foundation, BTEC, Portfolio or Access programme.
  • Entry to Year Zero is by portfolio
  • Direct entry into Level Two is also possible if you have completed Level One or equivalent elsewhere
