Although a graduate in modern languages, I have worked in technology related posts most of my working life gravitating from IT programming through IT training and development to e-learning design. Most of my work prior to joining UEL in 2004 was commerically focused though I have also worked in adult education and as an associate lecturer for the Open University.
As a Learning Technology Advisor (LTA) for UELconnect, I support staff across UEL in their use of UEL Plus (Blackboard Vista) and related technologies. Current areas of interest include the use of: Second Life (and Virtual Worlds in general) in healthcare settings; lecture capture technology and other forms of multimedia to support blended learning students; formative e-assessment to increase content interaction; web 2.0 technologies for collaborative activities with academic colleagues and indirectly with students; new forms of staff development to replace/complement traditional face to face sessions.
In the fast paced environment of learning technology I believe it's very important to keep as widely informed as possible so I participate in a variety of external networks including the M25 Learning technology group, ELESIG (Evaluation of Learners' Experiences of e-learning Special Interest Group) and the London Blackboard User Group amongst others. I also attend external events and conferences as both participant and presenter. Recent conference presentations and papers include ALT-C 2009 (Manchester, Sept 2009), 8th European Conference on e-learning (Bari, Italy, Oct 2009) and National Workshop on Learning in Immersive Worlds (Coventry, Nov 2009).
As the named LTA for the schools of Health & Bioscience and Psychology I am always happy to discuss proposals for new initiatives from staff in either school.
