About me

I initially joined UEL as an educational researcher in 1996 but quickly combined this work with teaching in the School of Education. Currently, I fulfil two roles in UEL. I remain a senior lecturer (.6) for the School of Education but since January 2009 have joined UELconnect (.4) as Head of Work-based Learning. The reason for my joint appointment is the opportunity to build on my experience of work-based learning to create and develop a portfolio of innovative and relevant work-related learning products across the institution and to respond to the new demands of employers and employees.

I have always considered learning to be a dynamic process and have recently developed a range of Foundation Degrees which allow students to remain in employment whilst studying and which combines their everyday work experience with their learning. In addition to leading on Foundation Degrees in the Cass School of Education, I am the tutor for a level 3 work based learning module which provides students with the opportunity to gain academic credit for learning conducted in their work place. This WBL module is a direct result of an earlier project that I managed entitled "Getting Your Degree to Work" which introduced, developed and coordinated WBL modules at levels 1, 2, and 3 in the university wide undergraduate degree scheme.

From 2004 - 2006 I was on secondment to the North East London Strategic Health Authority to manage a London Development Agency funded workforce development project. The project introduced and developed a range of work based learning initiatives for individuals and groups working in the health and social care sector. The project won two awards: The 2005 North East London Modernisation Award for Workforce Innovation; and the 2005 North East London Health Sector Equality and Diversity Award for innovative approaches to service delivery.

I also have experience of developing work based learning with small and medium sized companies. Whilst working as a lecturer/researcher I was also employed by UEL's Thames Gateway Technology Centre from June 2000 to June 2001 to evaluate a project aimed at developing a model of learning suitable for small and medium sized businesses in East London. The project outcomes included the exploration of an interactive and dynamic role for education and training providers using networked collaborative learning.
