I joined UEL as a learning designer in UELconnect in May 2008. My key responsibility is to design materials that provide effective and engaging learning to meet the particular needs of distance students. This means working in partnership with distance and e-learning team members, academic colleagues and external authors.
My role also offers exciting opportunities to provide consultancy and learning support services to external clients, a great way of using our skills and expertise to generate income. An interesting challenge in my role is navigating through some of both the hype and the cynicism around the use of new technologies and finding the best ways that these tools can genuinely enhance learning experiences for all kinds of learners.
I started working life teaching English as a second language abroad and in the UK and for nearly 10 years, developed learning resources and approaches in secondary and further education. Needing a change, I moved to an IT technical support and training role in the voluntary sector – an experience which led to an interest in interactive learning design and new role developing corporate training materials. I hope to be able to use my skills and experience to support the growth and impact of our distance and e-learning capabilities and expertise here at UEL.
