Postgraduate Degree

Postgraduate study is generally undertaken after successful completion of an undergraduate degree. Usually you must achieve a certain degree award – typically 2:2 or higher. In some instances relevant employment or research experience may enable you to join a postgraduate programme.

There are a variety of study options. Popular programmes such as a Masters Degree (MA, MSc), Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) or Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert/PGC) usually take just one year to complete if you study full time, two years if you opt for part-time mode.

Postgraduate awards are valued by employers because they demonstrate both aptitude and application. They assist with professional accreditation and career development and, in the case of teaching, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) award is the quickest way to qualify.

As a postgraduate student, you may also opt for an academic research route by studying for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Professional Doctorate – all offering opportunities to engage with cutting-edge knowledge and ideas. UEL Graduate School is responsible for developing scholarly activity in all subject areas and research students join an active and dynamic international community.

The normal preparation for advanced academic research is a one-year Master of Research (MRes), a taught postgraduate degree that incorporates a research project and is designed to provide a foundation for doctoral-level study.

All applications for postgraduate degree programmes are made direct to UEL. You will find more about entry requirements and your options at Study at UEL. For guidance on academic research, see our Graduate School pages. Also check out your wealth of study options on our Postgraduate pages.
