Timings and Structure

UEL recognise the commitment it takes to study and have devised a system that gives you more study options - and alternative routes to achieving your goals.

When can I start?

You can start many programmes in either September or February - a real bonus if you don’t want to wait a whole year before starting your degree or other full-time programme. If you opt to study via distance learning, you may be able to start your programme at any time.

Applications are simple to make. Find out more at How to apply.

How long will it take?

Most full-time undergraduate degrees take three years to complete. If you opt for a degree that includes substantial periods of work placement, your degree will take four years to complete.

Foundation degrees normally take two years to complete, and if you opt for an extended degree your programme will last four years.

The time it takes to complete postgraduate qualifications varies – usually from one year full-time for a taught programme such as an MA, MSc or PGCE. Find out more about your study options.

How hard will I study?

As a full-time student you can expect to average about 35 hours a week. Some programmes require more hours of hands-on tuition (seminars, lab work, tutorials) than others. As a guideline, expect 12-18 hours each week of teaching, with additional time for independent learning. We provide excellent learning support through our Libraries and learning centres and via our online learning environment UEL Plus.

And time out?

UEL operate a two-semester academic year, with taught study running from September-December and January-May. This means you get time out for individual study, travel or other commitments – including summer work to help you pay your way. We can support you in this through our dedicated Careers and Employability Service.

What if my circumstances change?

We recognise that that a degree is a big investment in your future, so offer flexibility if you need to find an alternative way to complete your programme. Many programmes offer the option to switch from full-time to part-time study. We also offer the option to move to distance learning.
