This is your guide to typical qualifications needed for programmes at UEL. We consider each case individually so contact us through email: advisors@uel.ac.uk for more advice on your study options.
Entry to most degree programmes is based on existing qualifications such as A Levels, GNVQs, BTEC, Scottish or Irish Highers or the Baccalaureate. The grades you received are converted into UCAS tariff points.
Our programme pages list typical minimum points requirements. You normally need at least 200 UCAS points, although some programmes ask for more, while others may accept less, depending on your skills, aptitude and experience (see Experience can count). Please note that:
Most degree programmes accept qualifications in subjects other than the area you wish to study, although there are some where you’ll need a specific A Level or equivalent.
We normally expect you to have a minimum of 5 GCSE’s Grade C or higher (or equivalent). All programmes require you to have a good level of English in order to cope with the written requirements of a degree programme – GCSE in English Language or Literature Grade C or higher (or equivalent) is therefore essential for all applicants. Most programmes also require a Grade C or higher in maths so don’t forget to include these on your application when you list your qualifications. UEL accepts the following Level 2 qualifications as equivalent to GCSE:
Applicants who do not have, or could imminently achieve, a Level 2 qualification in English and / or maths should still make an application – if your application shows potential, the School of teaching may offer you a test in English and / or maths in order to demonstrate your suitability for the programme.
Individual programme pages list entry requirements, which normally include a first degree or equivalent.
Remember that we accept a wide range of qualifications from across the world and may also take into account other skills and experience. Find out more.
Entry requirements for extended and foundation degrees are more flexible and they may provide an ideal route if you don’t have traditional academic qualifications or haven’t achieved the required grades or UCAS tariff points.
We are an inclusive university and recognise that if you have been out of education for some time you may not have formal qualifications such as A Levels or equivalent.
However, you may have relevant life/work experience or other qualifications that can be used to prove your suitability for further study, such as:
You can contact us through email: advisors@uel.ac.uk for more guidance, or check out AEL for guidance on other forms of learning that may count towards your place at UEL.
