Disability & Dyslexia

Hearing Impairments

What It Means

Deaf =Describes people with varying degrees of deafness

Hard of Hearing = Describes people who have mild to severe hearing loss

Profoundly Deaf = Describes people who have very little or no hearing, and British Sign Language (BSL) may be their first language

Support Available

In order to help you access information whilst studying at UEL, we can arrange:

BSL Interpreter
Note-taker
Communication Support Worker (CSW)

Other support includes:

Deaf certificate to help assessors draw attention to language difficulties associated with your disability.
Extended loans in the library
Access to assistive technology
Modification for exams
Hearing loops in teaching rooms and helpdesks
Advice and guidance on applying for the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) to pay for additional costs related to your disability

Every student's needs are different. Your disability advisor can help arrange the most appropriate level of support for your needs.

Letting Others Know

All information provided to us is considered confidential. We would not normally disclose it. With your consent, we will contact relevant members of UEL staff to inform them of your disability and support needs. This will be done by drawing up a Learning Support Agreement with your disability advisor.
