Disability & Dyslexia

Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder

What It Means

Individuals may experience hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention - or a combination of all three. Signs of hyperactivity tend to diminish in adults, but attention, concentration and organisation difficulties continue.

People with dyslexia tend to have the following profile:

Creative Easily distracted
Original Impulsive
Problem-solving Feelings of inner restlessness
Thinking outside the box Disorganised
Determined Poor memory
Often shows entrepeneurial tendencies Sequencing difficulties (putting things in order)
Resilient Mispronounces words
Generous Interrupts others
Adaptable Fidgets, taps feet and fingers
Energetic and productive Difficulty sticking to one task

"Gift of the gab"

Poor concept of time
Logical thinker Weak listening skills
Common sense Finds it difficult to make use of feedback
  Fails to plan ahead

AD(H)D frequently co-occurs with other specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia.

Every student's needs are different. Your dyslexia/disability advisor can help arrange the most appropriate level of support for your needs.

Letting Others Know

All information provided to us is considered confidential. We would not normally disclose it. With your consent, we will contact relevant members of UEL staff to inform them of your disability and support needs. This will be done by drawing up a Learning Support Agreement with your dyslexia/disability advisor.
