Dyslexia

What It Means

Dyslexia can affect the processing of information that is both received and expressed. There is a recognisable pattern of difficulties, although it does not affect everyone in quite the same way, and some people's experiences are more extreme than others.

People with dyslexia tend to have the following profile:

Strengths Weaknesses
Creative Poor organisation and time-management skills
Sees the bigger the picture Inaccurate reading and weak comprehension
Can have good verbal communication skills Slow at reading
Thinking outside the box Poorly structured assignments
Emotional awareness - reading non-verbal language Weak spelling
Visual Weak memory
Intuitive Difficulty following multi-step instructions
Insightful Word finding difficulties {"tip of the tongue" syndrome)
Perceptive Slow to process information that is seen/heard
Can be very motivated Falling behind with note-taking
Creative problem-solving abilities Late for appointments

Every student's needs are different. Your dyslexia/disability advisor can help arrange the most appropriate level of support for your needs.

Dyslexia need not be a barrier to learning and achievement. Indeed some of our most talented and famous artists, writers, businesspeople and scientists share this condition, so you’re in good company!

Letting Others Know

All information provided to us is considered confidential. We would not normally disclose it. With your consent, we will contact relevant members of UEL staff to inform them of your disability and support needs. This will be done by drawing up a Learning Support Agreement with your dyslexia/disability advisor.
