2.1 - In 2005/6 the CMT agreed that banding would apply to both home and international postgraduate fees. Given the wide variation between the home and international fee of some programmes it has not been possible to apply the banding consistently to each programme and some will have a home fee in one band and an international fee in another.
2.2 - All taught (on campus) postgraduate programmes now sit within the Academic Framework and the fees schedule shows the fee for a 30-credit module unless stated otherwise. In general, new and returning students are charged the same module fee. However, where the market has shown that an appreciably higher fee can be charged, a lower module fee based on the module fee at time of entry to the programme will be charged to continuing students. The “annual” fee (required for admissions letters for international students) has been calculated by multiplying the 30-credit module fee by the appropriate number of 30 credit modules for a validated award (e.g. x 6 for a Masters, x 4 for a PGDip and x 2 for a PGCert).
2.3 - A part-time annual fee is not shown as part-time status and the fees charged will be defined by the number of modules (and credits) taken within a given period. Postgraduate students will be designated as part-time if they are registered for a maximum of 90 credits in a calendar year, with a maximum of 60 credits in a Semester. Exceptionally, students who take 2 x 30 credit modules in Year 1 may take 4 x 30-credit modules in Year 2 and remain part-time.
2.4 - Only dissertation modules may be taken during the summer period.
2.5 - Fee Bands
| Home Band | 30 Credit Module Fee |
|---|---|
| Band 1 | £840 |
| Band 2 | £900 |
| Band 3 | £1,100 |
| Band 4 | £1,565 |
| Band 5 | £1,765 |
| International Band | 30 Credit Module Fee |
| Band 1 | £1,545 |
| Band 2 | £1,830 |
| Band 3 | £2,050 |
| Band 4 | £2,250 |
| Band 5 | £2,615 |
2.6 - Scholarships
The following scholarships will be granted to all new full-time international students with honours degrees or equivalent from a recognised HEI (these will be administered by the International/Admissions Office).
First class honours degree equivalent - £2,000
2.7 - Distance Learning Students
UK, EU and International students on distance learning programmes will be charged the “home” module banded fee for that programme.
Institutional bursaries and scholarships will not apply to Distance Learning students.
All Distance Learning programmes are administered by the UELconnect.
2.8 - PGCE Students
PGCE students are treated as undergraduate students for fees purposes and are eligible for undergraduate scholarships and bursaries.
2.9 - Channel Islands Fees (for students from Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man and Sark)
Tuition fees for Postgraduate students (excluding PGCE) from the Channel Islands are set at our discretion (and will normally be the standard home postgraduate fee).
Fees for MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate programmes may be found in the Fees Schedule 2010/11. Annual fees will apply even where the taught part of any programme is modular. Students will be charged the annual fee upon (re)enrolment each year and until write-up phase (where appropriate) or the end of the registration period.
3.1 - Postgraduate Research Students
(Research Funding Council to agree support in April 2010 – fees to be based on this)
All Postgraduate research programmes attract the same fee, regardless of School:
3.2 - Continuing Postgraduate Research and Professional Doctorate Students
Where continuing full-time international students were admitted prior to 2009/10 on an appreciably lower fee, they will be charged the fee they were charged in 2009/10 plus an increase of approximately 5% (see the Fees Schedule for details).
Where students are permitted to go into write-up phase, the following fees will be charged for one year only:
4.1 - Within the Academic Framework, the following do not apply:
The concept of assessment-only fees (without attendance), dissertation only fees, free write-up periods and major/minor projects does not exist under the Academic Framework. All students on taught (undergraduate and postgraduate) programmes will be permitted assessment and reassessment, followed by repeat assessment and repeat reassessment. Assessment and repeat assessment will attract the module charge while reassessment and repeat reassessment will be an entitlement covered by the module fee.
Reassessment and repeat reassessment will take place in September (this includes students who are currently intermitting but have outstanding reassessment/repeat reassessment). Students on programmes with a dissertation module taught during the summer period and examined in October will be entitled to reassessment, without extra fee, at the end of Semester A.
4.2 - Fees Policy 2010/11
There is one Fees Policy for UK, EU and International students. Applicants and students should be referred to this at www.uel.ac.uk/essguide/part2/section_l.htm. Staff should not attempt to advise students about fees or fees payment unless they are familiar with all aspects of the prevailing policy.
