Grants & Student Loans

Find out about the loans, grants and finance available to support you with your fees and living expenses as a student.

Payment of Loans and Grants

As from September 2011 there is NO need to bring your Payment Timetable into the University to be processed. Confirmation of your attendance will be automatically sent to the Student Loans Company once you have completed your online enrolment and your Payment Task.

If your funding does not come through within five working days of the payment date on your Payment Timetable, please email smart@uel.ac.uk giving your name and student number. Where possible please attach a scanned copy of your Payment Timetable.

SAAS students ONLY are required to present their Payment Timetables at the Student Helpdesks (at either Docklands or Stratford) to have their attendance confirmation manually sent to the Student Loans Company.

If you haven't yet applied for your student loans and grants, go to www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance and apply as soon as possible.

NEW ENTRANT & CONTINUING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS (who commenced study after September 2006)

You can apply for the following:

Tuition Fee Loan

Provided you are an undergraduate (‘home’ or EU) student you are eligible to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan up to the cost of your fees. You won’t pay anything back until you have left university and are earning more than £15,000 a year. There are no age restrictions. You can find out more at How fees work.

Note: When completing your application for funding, specify your tuition fees as £3,375, not the maximum amount. This needs to be filled in on section 4b on the PN1 form and on the Loan Request Form, and section 3a1 on the PR1 form and on the Loan Request Form.

Maintenance Loan

If you are a full time undergraduate ‘home’ student aged under 60 you can apply for a Maintenance Loan from Student Finance England to help with living costs. The amount you receive depends on your circumstances and household income. Like the Tuition Fee Loan it carries a very low interest rate and you pay nothing back until you are earning over £15,000. Find out more at How fees work.

Note: UEL’s academic year is four weeks longer than most other universities. You should ensure that these four extra weeks are taken into account. Further details of Student Loans arrangements can be found on the Student Loans Company website.

Maintenance Grant

Full time 'home' undergraduate students from lower income households can apply for a Maintenance Grant of up to £2,906 a year. This is income assessed and non-repayable.

2010 / 2011 and 2011 / 12 Entrant Students
You are eligible for the full grant if your household income is less than £25,000. Partial grants are available to households with an income of up to £50,778.

2009 / 2010 Entrant Students
You are eligible for the full grant if your household income is less than £25,000. Partial grants are available to households with an income of up to £50,778.

2008 / 2009 Entrant Students
Students starting in September 2008 or February 2009 will be income assessed where household income is less than £25,000 up to £61,062.

2007 / 2008 and 2006 / 2007 Entrant Students
Students starting in September 2008 or February 2009 will be income assessed where household income is less than £18,360 up to £39,796.

The Maintenance Grant is not available if you are eligible for means tested benefits (you apply for a Special Support Grant instead).

Note: If you receive the full or partial Maintenance Grant and are not eligible for means tested benefits, the amount you can borrow on your Maintenance Loan is reduced. The Student Loans Company will adjust this for you provided that you complete your application correctly.

Special Support Grant

Full time 'home' undergraduate students from households who receive or would be eligible for means-tested benefits can apply for a Special Support Grant of up to £2,906 a year. This is assessed by Student Finance England when you apply.

Note: students cannot be eligible for both the Maintenance Grant and the Special Support Grant in the same academic year.

CONTINUING STUDENTS (who started studying before September 2006)

We charge fees of £1,342 a year for all continuing ‘home’ and EU students on full-time undergraduate programmes, who started their programme before September 2006. Complete a PR1 application form to apply for:

Tuition Fee Support

Depending on household income you may be eligible for a grant towards the cost of your tuition fees up to a maximum of £1,342. If you are entitled to this support, it will be paid directly to UEL on your behalf. You must complete form PR1 to apply.

Tuition Fee Loan

If you are not eligible for a grant you can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan up to the amount of the tuition fees you pay. There are no age restrictions – complete form PR1.

Maintenance Loan

If you are a full time undergraduate ‘home’ student aged under 60 you can apply for a Maintenance Loan from your Student Finance England to help with living costs. The amount you receive depends on personal circumstances and household income. Find out more at how fees work.

Note: UEL’s academic year is four weeks longer than most other universities. You should ensure that these four extra weeks are taken into account.

Higher Education Grant

This replaces the Maintenance Grant for continuing students and a grant of up to £1,000 is available. The full amount is paid to you if you have an income of less than £16,750. A partial grant is available if your income is up to £22,735.
