Students Union
Run by you and for you, UEL SU - the Students’ Union - plays a central role in our University community. It is part of the NUS (National Union of Students), which represents students nationwide.
You’ll find a wide range of UEL SU activities – from parties to politics, sport to volunteering. It’s also a readymade social network, which you can join as soon as you arrive here.

About UELSU
- UEL has an active Students’ Union, UELSU, which the university recognises, funds and supports.

- It has a Chief Executive, David Miles, and a staff team devoted to providing these services and activities for students.

Interim Arrangements for UELSU for 2010-11
- There are no sabbatical officers in post at present. UELSU is being operated this year through a series of interim arrangements until new sabbatical officers are appointed in 2011.
- These arrangements will ensured that student representation at all levels in the university is maintained and the university remains totally committed to providing students with a voice in the running of all aspects of the university.
- All SU services will continue to operate including student societies and the student advice services. Student sport is not affected by these arrangements and will continue with a full programme.
Future of UELSU
- UELSU, like most Students’ Unions, will become a registered charity in 2011 run by a Trustee Board made up of elected students and independent external trustees.
- UEL’s Board of Governors and UELSU are taking the opportunity to consider the constitution and structure of the Students’ Union to ensure that it offers the best set of services to all students of UEL. A working party has been formed to steer this work.
- The working party has invited NUS to run a consultation of all students on what they would like to see from their Students’ Union.
- This will start next month and will lead to a referendum on the shape of the future Students’ Union so all students will be able to vote on this in December.
UELSU Elections 2010-11
- This will be followed in spring 2011, by elections for a new student officer team including full time paid sabbatical positions to start in July 2011.
- There is a clear commitment to hold a high profile student election that engages with a wide range of students in a free and fair way and that attracts the maximum number and range of students as candidates.
What you can do
- We very much hope you will all join in the consultation and elections
- There are lots of ways you can participate in this process. If you want to know more about this and be part of this unique opportunity we will provide registration details shortly on the UELSU website.
- We hope that all students will seriously consider taking advantage of the exceptional opportunities that holding an SU officer post provides to improve the lives of UEL students and to gain personal experience of executive leadership. There will be further information and support for any student interested in standing in those elections from January 2011.
