Learning With Us

Everyone learns in different ways and we offer a mix of teaching approaches to keep you engaged and stimulated throughout your programme and ensure you participate in order to gain the most from your studies.

What you can expect

• Lectures – delivered by academic staff or invited experts. Information and ideas may be presented from a variety of viewpoints so you become familiar with current debates. There’s usually an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the points raised.
• Tutorials – meetings with your tutors that allow you to discuss issues and receive feedback on how your work is progressing.
• Seminars – involving small groups, these provide an opportunity to discuss topics and share ideas, as well as stimulating debate and sometimes controversy. This environment encourages you to express ideas and consider alternative approaches.
• Group tasks – working within small self-managed groups, you get the opportunity to experience teamwork and delegation and engage in problem solving and task planning/execution.
• Projects – run as group or individual assignments, these may involve visiting workplaces or observing ‘real life’ situations. This gives you the chance to gain practical experience to support more theoretical study.
• Practicals – vital as part of scientific and technological subjects, these involve conducting tests and experiments to develop and practise skills or assess theoretical propositions.
• Work placements – organised for some programmes (and all sandwich programmes), these give you practical experience in a relevant organisation.
