Why do I need an ID Card?
We have a duty to protect our people, buildings and property such as library books, so ID Cards are issued to ensure our facilities and buildings are only used by UEL students. You’ll find your Card saves time and hassle, so keep it with you at all times.
What information is stored on my ID Card?
On the front, your Card has a photo of you with the month and year you started your programme at UEL and the expected end date. Your unique Student Number is contained on the barcode. This barcode can be scan read around UEL, allowing you to borrow library books, access buildings, confirm your attendance and get printing done. It doesn’t contain any sensitive personal information about you.
What happens if I lose my ID Card?
We ask you to look after your ID Card and keep it safe. If it is lost or stolen we can issue a replacement, but we charge £10 for this and the fee can’t be refunded even if your old card turns up. Your old card will be cancelled automatically once you inform us it’s lost or stolen. Visit the Student Services Helpdesk at Docklands or Stratford Campus to get a new Card and bring ID with you. To find out what proof of identity you need to bring, see ID Cards.
My ID Card isn’t working. What should I do?
You may have forgotten to re-register at the start of the new Academic Year (you can do this via UEL Direct). You may owe the University money, in which case you need to clear your debt before the ID is reactivated. Alternatively your card may simply be damaged. To avoid this, please refrain from keeping your ID card with your Oyster card and mobile phone devices. Visit our Helpdesk and we’ll help you resolve the problem.
Can I use my ID Card for student discounts?
It may be accepted in some places, but your best guarantee of discounts is to buy a student discount card valid for a range of shops and services. The NUS Extra card costs £10 and is issued by our Students’ Union UEL SU. You can obtain it from Students’ Union receptions (rooms NB.G.01 in Docklands or Bar/Common room in Stratford) or order online.
