Attendance Policy Guidance

Students

The policy and why it exists

As you know, attendance is a very important part of your degree and you must attend scheduled classes. Not only are classes an essential part of your learning, the Student Loan Company (and if you are an international student, the UK Border Agency) require you to attend classes. It is also part of our academic regulations.

The attendance policy is not new; it is simply being implemented in a different way (via a card touch in) and we will ensure that the policy is implemented fairly.

The practical stuff

You will NOT be withdrawn from your module if, in exceptional circumstances, you are late or miss one or two classes in the same module. If you miss a whole class, or are more than 15 minutes late for that class, you will, however, be recorded as being absent. You will receive a written notification upon your second instance of absence. This notification will remind you of your responsibilities to attend class and that in the event of a third absence, you will face possible withdrawal from the module.

It is very important that you tell your tutor if you know in advance that you are going to miss a class; additionally if something exceptional happens that prevents you from telling your tutor in advance, you are still allowed 48 hours AFTER that absence to tell your tutor about the reasons for your absence. Your School will advise you about the process you need to follow to notify us in these circumstances. If your card is lost or broken please visit Student Services at Stratford or Docklands Campus to order a new one.

Repeated non-attendance or lateness

If you miss three classes you will be notified that it is the University's intention to withdraw you from the module. If this happens you will be given a chance to appeal this decision and explain why you missed the classes. The letter that is sent to you will explain how you should make this appeal. If your explanation is satisfactory you will be reinstated without penalty.

No student will be withdrawn from any module without the personal agreement of the Dean of their School, who will review all of the circumstances, including any explanations given by the student, before making a final decision.

Please remember that the official University policy states that you cannot be finally taken off a module until you have had the chance to explain your absences via the process outlined above.
