Student services

We aim to give you a range of high-quality student services, which offer advice, information, financial help, counselling, services for people with a disability or dyslexia, recreational opportunities, careers guidance, health services and childcare support throughout the period of your studies.

Health & Wellbeing

You can expect us to:

• provide a confidential, professional counselling service in accordance with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Framework for Good Practice;
• treat the issues that you talk to us about in confidence, and with respect and understanding;
• offer a preliminary counselling appointment at one of our campuses within 10 working days of your request;
• offer short-term counselling once you have had a preliminary counselling sessions and as soon as an ongoing space becomes available;
• refer you to another healthcare professional if necessay;
• see you briefly or speak to you over the phone within 2 working days if necessary;
• produce and publish clear and accurate information through our website at www.uel.ac.uk/studentservices/wellbeing/counselling/
• run workshops on a range of counselling related issues;
• seek your views on how our services meet your needs and how we might make improvements;
• provide you with a confidential service so you can get advice and guidance about your health, (including contraception, healthy eating, smoking cessation, etc.);
• provide a health service which meets students’ basic healthcare needs;
• offer free health-centre services on campuses, alongside referral and emergency arrangements to local doctors and hospitals;
• provide up to date information on various health topics through booklets, leaflets and newsletters, available on campus and online www.uel.ac.uk/studentservices/wellbeing/healthcare
• publish up-to-date advice and education on health issues;
• organise events, workshops and exhibitions, throughout the year, to raise awareness of many health topics;
• provide on campus and online advice - healthcentre@uel.ac.uk

We expect you to:

• register with a National Health Service general practitioner (GP) on campus or, if you don't live on campus, with a GP local to where you live;
• take responsibility for your own health;
• pre-book appointments as far as possible;
• follow our advice or that of the emergency services if there is an emergency;
• let us know as early as possible if you cannot keep an appointment;
• take responsibility for seeking help if problems arise;
• keep appointments or inform us as early as possible if you are unable to attend;
• respect staff and other service users;
• give us feedback on the service you have received from us;
