IT suffers from inefficient practices – through the speed of growth in computing and communication, many inefficiencies have been unintentionally created. For example, IBM estimates for every 100kWh of electricity supplied to a typical data centre, as little as 3 kWhs are actually used to do productive work – the remaining energy consumed by starting up and cooling the underused hardware.
