The unique partnership between Barking Riverside Ltd, the University of East London and London Wildlife Trust has been recognised with an award in the Integrated Habitats Design Competition 2012. The work of the partnership in promoting the conservation of biodiversity within the development, the adaptation of the site for building resilience in the face of climate change, and the promotion of community engagement for the future sustainable management of the development has been Highly Commended by the judging panel. For more information please check here.
UEL's Sustainability Research Institute (SRI) has been shortlisted for the Times Higher Education Awards 2012 in the Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Development Category.
SRI engages with local stakeholders to experience real-life issues related to local regeneration case studies and recently rescued one of Britain’s rarest insect, the streaked bombardier beetle (Brachinus sclopeta) by constructing a new habitat entitled the Beetle Bump in a last ditch effort to save the species in the UK.
The Beetle Bump now stands as a bold and visual statement of UEL’s commitment to the conservation of regional biodiversity and the innovative ways that it can be incorporated into urban green space within sustainable development.
