Four goals from Aaron Sommers as well as goals from David Shovlin, Sherwin Stanley and Marley Spindler were more than enough to see off Greenwich University at Leyton in the BUCS semi-final.
UEL were too strong for Greenwich, with the game effectively over after twenty minutes after Sommers put Greenwich to the sword to make it 3-0, after UEL had scored in the third and ninth minute. With the wind knocked out of their sails, Greenwich University were put under the cosh for the entire first half, as their shell-shocked defence couldn’t handle the pace and movement of the UEL front line, with Sommers in particular in impressive form.
After the restart, UEL’s defence were caught cold as Greenwich nipped in to claw one back in the 46th minute. This only served to inspire Sommers further as he got his hat-trick a minute later, making it 4-1, killing any chance of a comeback. There was an inevitable lull in proceedings after this, but with Greenwich heads down UEL capitalised further in the 61st minute with Sommers getting his forth.
The game turned nasty in the last half hour, with a few late challenges flying in as Greenwich got more and more frustrated.UEL stepped off the gas, but Stanley and Spindler completed the rout with goals in the 83rd and 88th minute respectively. UEL were far too strong for Greenwich, as their defence collapsed after conceding three goals after twenty minutes and never really recovered from the blow during the game.
The invention and pressure by UEL was a sight to behold as Greenwich struggled to string more than four passes together. UEL put in a classy performance and they could have scored more, but they must expect a stronger side in the final on March 13th.
However, in this form they could beat anybody.
