UEL Student heads to the 2012 Tag Rugby World Cup in New Zealand

Tuesday 4 December 2012

There will be 15 nations taking part in the World Cup across a range of divisions from U16’s through to over 50’s age groups.   Great Britain and Ireland will be sending two teams to the competition, one to compete in the open mixed competition and another to compete in the open men’s competition.  University of East London Student, Carl Duckels (inset), is one of the players in the Men’s open squad and he is looking forward to taking on the best in the World “The Aussies came across here on tour last year so we know how good they will be, some of their skills are amazing! Going by some of the Kiwi’s that play in the Leagues in London plus what we have heard about them they will also be up there and I’m sure they will be especially keen to win given it is being held in their own back yard. It’s going to be really exciting to be up against the top players in the world and hopefully we can put in a good show.  Great Britain and Ireland have put together two strong squads, and have put in a lot of hard work at training.  It will be extremely tough but obviously we would like to go out there and win.  The main thing though is we go out there and do both ourselves and our country proud.  Regardless of the results we will have a good time and get some great experiences of playing against the best players in the world”

Carl and much of the Great Britain and Ireland squads play Tag Rugby in the Try Tag Rugby (www.trytagrugby.com) leagues that run across London throughout the year, including last summer at  Memorial Recreation Ground in West Ham.  The West Ham competition will be running again at the end of April 2013 but before then Carl hopes to get some Tag Rugby going within UEL.  Carl explains more “Tag Rugby is tailor made for students! It’s an exciting non contact version of Rugby that everybody can play regardless of shape, size, sex or age.  There’s no massive time commitment, you don’t need to attend training twice a week, you just turn up and play. It’s all about having fun, meeting new people and just having a good time!  It’s also actually notorious in Ireland for being a great way to meet people of the opposite sex, it’s not just Ireland though, there’s more than a few relationships across London that owe their thanks to Tag Rugby!! It’s not a problem if you haven’t played before, everybody is friendly and the rules are easy to pick up”.  Carl has already set up a UEL Tag Rugby Facebook page and will be trying to get some Tag Rugby started during January.  If you would be interested in giving it a go then join the UEL Tag Rugby Facebook page and keep watching for updates.
