Sam who is studying an Msc in Sports Management at UEL, was sailing on a Civil Service team in the Victory Trophy. The Victory Trophy brings some of the best sailors from across the armed forces, in the event where the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air force and Civil Service all enter a team. It is a trophy steeped in history, with part of the trophy even being made from HMS Victory her self.
It was fitting that the event ran on the anniversary of the battle of Trafalgar. Although the day started with a light breeze, and the constant threat of rain, Sam and his team got off to a good start winning 2/3 of the 1st round races. The breeze steadily built over the course of the day and the rain that threatened eventually delivered!
In the stronger breeze, it seemed that no one could touch the team from the Civil Service, with Sam and the other 5 team members continuing throughout the day unbeaten, with an eventual scorecard which read ‘won 8/9’.
This was the first time the Civil Service Team have won this historic event in 44 years. A good day for Sam and the team, a great day for UEL!
