UEL ease to victory over Goldsmith

Monday 4 March 2013

UEL went into the game knowing that a win would put them top of the table with a game in hand, and they didn’t fail to impress. A great mixture of pace and concentration put Yassir Sliti’s men in control from the first set. The 6’6 player and manager putting in a vintage display which sees them leapfrog Essex to top the league.

The 1st set started off in a Jekyll and Hyde fashion for both teams. Momentum seemed to switch both sides until UEL finally had the ball warmed up. Dwayne Bowman and Ernestas Kaminskas, showing their great athleticism, provided some clever balls into the opposition area, forcing Goldsmith to make errors in their court and to take the first set by 25 points to 18.

However, the 2nd set marked an improved start for Goldsmith, but it was not to be again as UEL quickly hit the gear to lead 20-10. Every shot seemed to become a point for UEL, emphasising the great power, pace and strength in the team. They took the in the second set 25 to 12.

Goldsmith, to their credit, proved to be stiffer opposition in the 3rd set, but Sliti’s team again proved to be too much on the day, as a mixture of great settings and serves, particularly by Henrique Araujo, warmed UEL up in emphatic style ahead of their semi-final BUCS Cup match against Brunel on March 13th.

UEL won the final set 25 to 18 and are now joint top with 15 points.

Despite the win, Yassir Sliti said that the performance of the team needs to be “better for when we play the decider of our semi final next week.” “We have got a bit of work to do and I am confident we will be ready to go by next week”, added Sliti.    “They’ll have a very good team and we will have to be at our best.”
