Despite UEL having several players missing through injury their performance was one the best of the season. Essex who are yet to conceed a goal this season found themselves under the kosh early on as UEL outpassed them for the majority of the first half. Goalkeeper Dan Robinson had a quiet opening 45 minutes thanks to excellent defending from UEL.
Stefan Nielson started brightly and gave UEL their first with a finish from a tight angle to give the home side a 1-0 advantage. With Essex conceeding their first of the campaign a second followed shortly before the half, as persistent play down the left hand side resulted in a cross that was neatly controlled by Sherwin Stanley then blasted in for a 2-0 lead at half time.
The second half started similarly to the first with UEL dominating possession and reducing any space for Essex University to play and build up an attack. Despite being 2-0 up, UEL did much of the pressing in the hope of finding a 3rd goal. UEL came close to adding to their lead on a few occasions with a half volley from Aaron Sommers, which the keeper did well to tip over the ball. Stefan Nielsen then nearly added to his goal in the first half when the keeper came out at an angle and he attempted to chip him only for the keeper to get his finger tips to the ball. Later in the second half Drew Jones and Sherwin Stanley saw their shots saved as the pressure grew.
The referee brought the game to an end with University of Essex 1st top or their tier 2 league and hadn’t previously conceded a goal in the Cup, losing 2-0 to an impressive UEL 1st Team, who remain unbeaten in the league and now move into the Semi-finals of the Cup vs. Greenwich University 1st Team Wednesday February 20th.
