Elite athlete wins silver at British Judo Championships

Wednesday 30 January 2013

Andrew Burns

Andrew Burns(pictured far left), who is a postgraduate student currently studying MSc Strength and Conditioning, made his way to the final of the -90kg category in emphatic style, with six wins by Ippon – the highest score a competitor can achieve in Judo.

Despite a more than convincing performance in the final, Andrew was defeated by Matthew Purssey from JudoScotland.

Andrew said: “I am pleased this has solidified my position as one of the country’s top two competitors in this category. Having won six fights by Ippon, I have to say this is certainly one of my best displays for Great Britain.”

Following a commanding performance in the -78kg category, former UEL elite athlete and Olympic silver medallist, Gemma Gibbons, went one better than her London 2012 exploits, to win her first British Championship senior gold medal.

Andrew Burns will compete for Great Britain at the European Open Men tournament in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Saturday, 2 February.
