Women's Football win their first match of the season

UEL 1sts

UEL men’s first team started their season with a 2-2 draw to Greenwich University. UEL started positively but spurred a few chances in front of goal leaving themselves questioning if it was going to be their day. After dominating large spells of the first half, the domination paid off when newcomer Jeremy Boateng  showed great footwork on the outside of the box to jinx past the opposition and crash a brilliant shot under the helpless Greenwich keeper. Early on in the second half UEL doubled their lead through a goalkeeping calamity and another debutee Liam Bromfield netted after poor handling from a cross left him to scramble the ball into the net. UEL’s defense was finally unravelled a few minutes later when a loose back pass was seized upon and tucked away to make it 2-1. After riding the storm and wasting further chances, UEL’s hard work was undone when in the final few minutes, a trip in the box allowed Greenwich to level from the penalty spot. A point nonetheless and a positive start from the team on their first outing this season.

UEL 3rds

After a sluggish start from the home team,Brandon Manoka grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck with a drilled bottom corner finish after a good turn on the edge of the box. As the game livened up, good build up play from defence to attack resulted in Manoka rounding the keeper only to be brought down. Ryan Pepperill converted the resulting penalty with a calm finish. The game took a twist when Pete McGuinness, after committing a debatable foul outside the box, was sent off for abusive language. Shortly after halftime, a third goal folloed when Richard Johnson headed home a well taken Pepperill corner. Down to ten men, UEL routinely defended the waves of attack and held firm for a comfortable three points.

UEL Women's

In a match of two halves, UEL Women's team convincly beat Kent 1st 4-2. UEL took sometime to settle into their first game of the season but always looked the better side. Despite good work by midfield, Kent went in front.  With only 10minutes left in the 2nd half UEL  stepped up their play, with some great opportunities from Arva, Najina and Thembie and great crossing from Holly and forward play from Stef in centre mid. At the half time whistle the score line remained 1-0 to Kent but after a motivating half time talk by captain Emma Marlow and a few position changes, UEL started the second half looking confident.

Five minutes into the second half, UEL drew the score line back to 1-1. An excellent run from Najina, beating two defenders on the edge of the box, she got the ball onto her favoured left foot lobbing the keeper to get UEL off the mark. Straight after the goal Zee replaced Chandni on the left wing to try a different style of play going. The second goal came soon after on the 60th minute with a great corner from Holly which was whipped into a dangerous area of the box and after some scrappy play a Kent player put the ball into her own net. The second goal gave UEL more confidence to pass the ball around midfield and the confidence showed when the third goal, again set up from Holly, came on the 75th minute. The cross from Holly found the path of Najina who was one on one with the keeper, the Kent keeper managed to collect the ball, however the pressure from Najina caused her to drop the ball into the path of Thembie who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net making the score 3-1.

For the last 10 minutes another substitute, this time Amanda with Laurie-Ann and Chloe came off with an injury so some changes were made in the midfield allowing for Trisha to come on the right wing. The fourth and final goal for UEL came from a great independent run from Arva to take the ball around three defenders and the keeper to slot the ball into the net from an acute angle making it 4-1 to UEL. In the last few minutes of the game Najina gave away a penalty after a silly challenge in the box, the penalty was saved by Keeper Emma however, a Kent player found the rebound finding the back of the net making the final score line 4-2. All put in a great performance and confidence is high for next week’s game against Middlesex.
