
UEL’s Volleyball Men’s 1st team travelled to Sussex University to compete in the BUCS Conference cup final match last Wednesday. UEL went into the match knowing that a win would crown the volleyball team BUCS conference cup winners, which would be a first in history for UEL.
The 1st set started with UEL serving and scoring the first point of the match with a poor return from the Sussex team. Momentum seemed to switch between both sides until UEL finally had the ball warmed up. UEL provided some clever balls into the opposition area, forcing Sussex to make errors in their court enabling the visitors to take the first set by 25 points to 18.
The 2nd set marked an improved start for both teams. Both teams supplying clever shots, forcing each other to make errors. Sussex seemed to be right on the tail of UEL and with bad calls being made by the referee in the first and second set UEL needed to stay focused. UEL lost the second set 27-29 allowing Sussex back into the match.
The 3rd set saw UEL’s Captain Yassir Sliti emphasise his enduring value to the team, encouraging a more promising performance from the team. Both teams stepped onto the court with determination to win the set and become closer to getting their hands on the gold BUCS conference cup medals. Every shot seemed to become a point for UEL, showing the great power, pace and strength in the team, UEL took the second set 25-12.
The 4th set started and this was the decider. Both teams worked hard for every point and this was shown in long rallies between the even sides. After 20mins UEL were victorious with a score of 25-21, making the UEL Men’s team the first to win the BUCS conference cup final winners with a match score of UEL 3 – 1 Sussex.
