Women’s Netball Match Report: UEL A’s 46 versus Essex 3rds 16

By Jack Bacon

University of East London’s (UEL) women’s netball team powered home to victory over their Essex opponents winning 47 points to 16 at Newham Leisure Centre.

The Blues opened the point scoring constantly moving the ball around, keep Essex penned in their own half.

The home side quickly moved into double digits as they enjoyed the training match feel to the first quarter and took a 10-1 lead into the break.

After the restart the balance of play appeared to have levelled out as Essex took the game to the Blues and both sides counter-attacking each other. The Blues defence was tested more often, yet they still doubled their first quarter points to hold a 14 point lead over a deflated Essex at the halfway stage. An Essex comeback looked unlikely, as the Blues stepped up their movements to score 10 points with no return, their best passage of the match.

Essex managed to reduce the deficit towards the end of the quarter but the quality in performance up to this point suggested nothing but a win for the UEL Blues. The Blues used their height to full effect both scoring effectively and defending well as they conceded just two points before the end of the game. In exchange the Blues were scoring freely needing only one attempt to find the hoop on most occasions as the team’s confidence flowed from start to finish.

UEL will be looking forward to a repeat performance as up next for them are the same Essex team in a cup match.
