UEL Rowing teams have taken gold, silver and bronze at BUCS Championships this year, leaving fans in ‘oar’ of their achievements. The team competed in multiple events at the Small Boats Head in Boston, Lincolnshire, and rowed away with one gold, one silver and 2 bronze medals.
John Collins and David bell, fresh from their recent successes in Nottingham, put in a stellar performance in the men’s double scull and came away a fraction of a second short of taking the gold. David and Alan Sinclair then teamed and took the bronze in the men’s pair.
It was the women’s team that really shone through, however, with Medical Psychology undergraduate Rebecca Humphreys and ERASMUS student Merle Schaefer winning gold in the woman’s lightweight double sculls, securing a comfortable lead over their closest rival with a time of 23:3.12.
This impressive feat of oarsmanship has rowed them into UEL history as the first female crew from the University to win a BUCS rowing championship.
Medalist, David Bell said: ''The team put in good performances throughout the whole weekend and we showed we will be a team to watch come the summer. Though I think I speak for the whole squad when I say our best is yet to come,'' an exciting statement of intent considering that UEL was on the winner’s podium in a quarter of the races over the opening weekend.
