UEL best university in London for Judo!

Over the last semester, University of East London (UEL) sports scholars have travelled the world competing in Judo World Cups, a Grand Prix and closer to home the Judo Test Event. Winning a total of four international medals, the sports scholars represented UEL on podiums across the globe.

As part of the London Prepares series, two UEL students competed in the 57kg category at the Judo Test event in the London Excel on December 3rd. Fighting in a weight above her normal weight, UEL Strength and Conditioning student Sophie Cox, an Athens Olympian, won a bronze medal in a exciting day of Judo. Beaten by Cox in repechage, Szandra Szogedi, representing Ghana, finished a respectable 7th at the same Excel event.  In November, Cox also won bronze at the prestigious Amsterdam Grand Prix, while Szogedi won the London Universities and Colleges Senior Open.

In the last month MSc student Gemma Gibbon won bronze at both the Korea and Samoa World Cups.  Gibbon’s podium finishes will have moved her up the rankings, edging her closer to a place in the GB Olympic Judo team.

With three potential UEL students competing in Judo at London 2012, University of East London will be eagerly awaiting the team announcements next May.
