The Newham All Stars Sports Academy (NASSA), a grassroots through to competitive basketball programme and UEL basketball partners, based in Newham, East London, has been granted the Inspire Mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme.

The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The opportunity to deliver an Olympic sport, in an Olympic borough is truly inspirational for both the club and all the young people, parents, coaches and volunteers who are involved in ensuring that NASSA is the success that it is today.

The young people of Newham aspire to be the best both on and off the court. 2012 instils a desire and a hunger to deliver projects, through NASSA, aimed at increasing participation in sport, and provide opportunities for the whole community to become involved. It ensures the continued development of talented players and will result in world class sporting facilities in East London. The opportunities’ that the 2012 Olympic games provides is absolutely fantastic.

Seb Coe, Chair, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: “The Inspire programme is ensuring the legacy of the 2012 Games starts now as projects like NASSA are enabling people in the London Borough of Newham to make positive life changes.”

NASSA Director Natasha Hart said “It’s a great privilege to be awarded something as prestigious as this. We have been working very hard over the last couple of years and this award will help to further inspire and motivate all people but especially the young so that they make to most of all that the Olympics 2012 have to offer”.

NASSA has been at the forefront of sports development in the London Borough of Newham and has established several projects that tackle anti social behaviour and gang crime, such as the ‘Carry a Basketball not a Blade’ project. It aims to engage young people in sport and remove them from the streets and the temptation to become involved in crime.
