Hope Powell visits UEL

UEL welcomed England Ladies football team manager Hope Powell, who paid a visit to the Stratford and Docklands campuses.

Lewisham born Hope had a tour around the university, guided by close friend and lecturer Dr Marcia Wilson and got the chance to meet up with some of the UEL students who were present at the warm weather training camp in La Manga in January.

Annabel Ottey (Sport & Exercise Science), Rachel Kent (MSc Sports Psychology), Hannah Griffiths (Sports Coaching) and Dominique Hume (Sports Journalism) all attended the training camp, where they went to training sessions, interviewed players and coaches and watched the two closed door friendlies against the Netherlands and Norway.

Hope became the first woman to achieve the UEFA Pro Licence, the highest coaching award available, in 2003. She was appointed an OBE in 2002 before receiving a CBE in the 2010 birthday honours.

Hope herself played for England, making her England debut at the tender age of 16 and also played for Millwall Lionesses for nine years, winning the FA Cup three times.

The England team flew out to Cyprus last week to compete in the Cyprus Cup, playing Italy, Scotland and Canada, before playing a final game against any of the other eight nations who are attending, the opponents being decided by their standing in the league table.

This tournament is being used as a warm up to the World Cup finals in Germany in the summer, where England find themselves playing against Japan, New Zealand and Mexico.

Dominique Hume is a Sports Journalism student at the University of East London
