Last week UEL student Szandra Szogedi won bronze at the African Senior Judo Championships and in doing so wrapped up a successful semester for UEL sports scholarship students. Representing Ghana in the -57kg cateogory, Szandra glided through the qualifying rounds before meeting eventual Silver medallist Hortance Diedihiou in the semi-final. Despite a strong performance, Szandra was defeated to finish in a very respectable third place. This result follows the 2nd year journalism student’s BUCS gold in the same category in March and a very strong 5th place finish at the Judo Grand Prix Dusseldorf.
A tense few weeks are in store for Szandra as she awaits the announcement of the Ghana team for London 2012.There is also a nervous time ahead for Sitting Volleyball player Asghar Nasimi who is hoping his name is on the team sheet when Paralympics selections are made in the next few weeks. Asghar will represent GB in the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in May and will hope his team continue to excel, after a strong performance at the WVOD Intercontinental Cup in Egypt recently.
Someone who has secured their place for London 2012 is UEL student Ali Jawed. Powerlifter Ali, currently taking a gap year to train for the Games, has been selected for the Paralympics GB.
Throughout this semester UELBC continued their domination of the university rowing scene. Following wins last semester, the mens crew of Tom Wilkinson, David Bell, Alan Sinclair and John Collins were impressive in winning the Quadruple Sculls event at the BUCS 4s and 8s head. Elsewhere David Loveday was narrowly pipped to win silver in the student category at the British Indoor Championships.
First year student Astijus Kazlauskaz won UEL’s first boxing medal, when he won the u57kg Novice category at BUCS Championships. Astijius who trains with West Ham Boxing Club convincingly beat his competitor to bring this year’s BUCS medal tally on par with 2010-2011season. Basketball player Achai Biong has been selected to represent English Universities at the Home Nations Championships.
Fresher Lumar Sylvester was impressive in the opening rounds of the 200m at the BUCS Indoor Athletics Championships, and ran a personal best before a tough final draw scuppered his chances of a medal and saw him finish fifth. First year Sports Coaching student Kleovolous Loucaides just missed out on a medal in the BUCS Judo -73kg event. He was winning 10-0 in his quarter-final fight and looked to have the upper hand, before momentarily losing concentration and losing by ippon.
