In the absence of scholar and UEL number 1 Marshall Tutu, Johnny Parkes made very light work of Queen Mary’s number 1, winning in straight sets 6-1 6-1. Former junior ITF circuit player Edouard Leonett also had a straight forward win leaving UEL 3-1 up in the tie, but with the other 2 singles matches ending in defeat for UEL, it meant the spoils were shared at three a piece at the end of the tie.
As this was a cup game this fixture had to end on the day, with two more singles championship tie breaks to play and if needed a shoot out doubles championship tie break. The fixture was about to become even more dramatic. The tense affair yielded another deadlock, with the two hotly contested shoot out tie breaks resulting in both teams picking up one more rubber each.
And so it came down to a final 10 pointer doubles shoot out with UEL’s university tennis coordinator Tony Brown teaming up with Edouardo Leonett and after a tense opening to the tie break the boys from UEL went into 5th gear and ran away with the tie break 10 points to 5, resulting in a dramatic win for UEL and their place in the last 16 of the cup secured in the most dramatic fashion.
