Introduction

University of East London Judo Club

Despite being one of the newest and smallest clubs at University of East London, the Judo club is one of our most successful.  The club includes three Judoka vying for Olympic selection.

Our elite players include Ghanaian international, BUCS Champion and African Senior medallist Szandra Szogedi, Athens Olympian and GB number 1 Sophie Cox, and Gemma Gibbons, a two times BUCS Champion and former European U23 bronze medallist.  Cypriot Senior Silver medallist Kleovoulos Loucaides brings strength to our men’s team.

Both our Stratford and Docklands campuses are within commuting distance of a range of high performance clubs, and we are the closest university to the GB High Performance Centre at Dartford.  The newly built SportsDock also has facilities for mat practice, as well as a start-of-the-art strength and conditioning room ideal for high performance athletes.

The highlight of the university year is the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) national championships which hold competitions for both experienced and novice players. In 2013, UEL will hope to be represented in the team aspect of the championships for the first time.

For those who are new to judo, we run taster sessions, and the club welcomes athletes of all levels and abilities.  From September 2012 Sportivate sessions will run at SportsDock, and Try a Sport Sessions are run at some of the local sixth form colleges.
