Sports’ Descriptions
New 2012 Programme
All sports are aimed at beginner and intermediate level. You will never be asked to perform a skill that you don’t feel comfortable with. If you have any specific questions about a sport please contact Claire Smith at tryasport365@uel.ac.uk.
- Ability Camp (Disability Sport): Open to all students with any disability. A chance to take part alongside other students in various Paralympic and Olympic sports. This session is indoor.
- Badminton: Learn to play, or develop existing skills through coaching and match play. The aim of the game is simple – hit the shuttlecock over the net to beat your opponent. This session is indoor.
- Badminton (Badders in the City): A coached 7 week badminton course. Come and improve your skills and learn new tactics and techniques.
- Badminton ('no strings'): Just come along and play at this supervised match play session.
- Back to Netball:
A gentle introduction to the team game of netball.
Sessions are coach led and cover basic skill development and court play. The emphasis of these sessions is on learning new skills and having fun playing netball. This session is indoor.
- Basketball: A chance to try different versions of the game (half court, 3v3) as well as traditional basketball. Coaching available to help you hone your skills. This session is indoor.
- Basketball League: 3 v 3 league with Newham All Star Sports Academy. You don't need to come with a team as teams will be established on arrival. Opportunity to stay and play/watch/volunteer at NASSA National League games which are from 12pm. Only running every 2 weeks on 25th Sept, 9th & 23rd October, 6th & 20th November, 4th & 18th December.
- Beginners Boxing: Come and try boxing in this mixture of boxing and fitness. All levels welcome.
- Cardio Tennis: Tennis activity combining skills and music. It doesn't matter if you can't play tennis as the aim of the session is to see how many steps you can do in an hour (measured on a pedometer). A mix of aerobics and tennis.
- Dodgeball:You've seen the film, now try the sport for yourself. Played in teams, you try and hit players on the opposing team with a soft ball.
- Fencing: A combat sport using specific bladed weapons. Score points by making contact with your opponent on different areas of their body.
- 5-a-side football: Come and play matches with other students. Supervised by a qualified coach.

- Futsal: A South American variant of football, played indoors on a smaller court and with a smaller, heavier ball. Learn the rules, practise your skills and play the game. This session is indoor.
- Indoor Cricket: Played in a Sports Hall (sometimes using cricket nets). Receive coaching on the different positions and experience fast, fun game play. This session is indoor.
- Jogging: A session for complete beginners, intermediate and advanced level runners. The qualified leader will ensure all ability groups are catered for. A mixture of interval and fartlek training, along with continuous runs.
- Judo: A martial art featuring grappling and core fitness.
- Mixed Martial Arts (MMA): A contact combat sport which allows the use of striking and grappling and takes techniques from boxing, wrestling, judo, kick-boxing and many other martial arts.
- Table Tennis: Played indoor on a table. Work with experienced coaches to improve your skills through drills and match play.
- Trampolining: If bouncing on a large bed sounds like fun, then trampolining is for you. Work through basic moves with our experienced coach and see instant improvement.
- Volleyball: Work with your team to try and get the ball over the net. Our qualified coach will ensure you have lots of fun with drills, skills and matches.
- (Introduction to) Weightlifting: This female only session will provide an introduction to the use of the Olympic bars and bar bells. Designed to give you an all over body workout not to 'bulk you up'.
