Joining Instructions

Our PAL Student Ambassador scheme aims to provide role models to pre-entry audiences thinking of choosing to come to university whilst also providing practical support for UEL led events.

The PALS Model

We believe in running this scheme much like any conventional employment in order to give our students a taste of the employment sector. In such, we ask for a well-written application, we interview in panels and we hire on the basis of skills matching and availability.

We expect our Ambassadors to be professional in representing UEL to the highest standards and we provide constructive feedback enabling students to grow into their role.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for students from across the full range of UEL Schools and Fields and we welcome the opportunity to link Ambassadors to local schools they may have previously attended

We want our PALS to be:

  • Passionate about their course of study
  • Love university life
  • Enjoy working in a social team environment
  • Willing to learn and grow as an individual and a team member
  • Able to take direction and get “stuck-in” 

We need our PALS to:

  • Submit an online application
  • Attend essential training sessions
  • Undertake a UEL-led Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check
  • Be available for occasional work that maybe outside of 9-5 and may also involve being off campus

The Benefits

Being a student ambassador is a tremendous experience on a number of different levels, here are some of them

  • Gathering evidence of work experience to get ahead in the employment market through:
    • Working on events and as part of larger projects
    • Working with school / college students
    • Making presentations
  • Enhancing skills and developing attributions around; leadership, team work, communication and confidence
  • Gaining access to a potential reference to support future job applications
  • Performance can be used as part of a recommendation for other UEL programmes such as:
    • An application to be considered for UEL’s talent pool run by the Employability Unit
    • An application for a position as one of Residential Services Residential Assistants
  • Gaining time as part of the number of hours required for UEL’s Volunteering Module
  • Gaining time as part of the number of hours expected of UEL’s scholarship students
  • Taking part in workshops on; making applications, presenting yourself, career planning

So what's involved?

We'll be recruiting continually over the year and offering training at regular intervals at which you must attend to work on larger events.

Once you have been hired, you will receive regular emails detailing available jobs to you. You can opt whether to take part or not but remember that the more work you do the more benefits will be open to you!

There are numerous activities that student ambassador can get involved in:

  • Marketing events such as Open Days
  • Widening participation visits to UEL’s campuses by local school or college students who are keen to get the real picture of what university is about and to meet people from a similar background to themselves
  • Making presentations to represent their subject e.g. engineering, sport to encourage students to carry on with their learning in this subject
  • Going out to schools and colleges to give presentations about UEL, the student experience and their subject area
  • Supporting the orientation of international students arriving in the UK and at UEL
  • Taking part in school or college led projects to support for example literacy
